6HL007 Research For Health Project Question: Overview Identify a topic of your choice that is relevant to your degree discipline; review the literature on this topic to identify a gap in knowledge. Develop a research question and identify a suitable methodology (qualitative or quantitative), research design and sampling strategy that would enable you to answer this question. Design a data collection instrument (i.e. questionnaire, focus group/interview schedule, diary, observation checklist or rating scale) that will address your research question. Provide a rational for instrument development in your literature review. Discuss the strengths and limitations of your data collection tool in the discussion. Task: Working in coordination with schools and facilitators of education, can parents enhance of the quality of sex education that is being delivered to young people aged 10-18years old through an initial pilot study? Answer: Research Design In the prospective study, the descriptive research design will be employed by the researcher to relate the findings retrieved from the participants, subjected to prior identification of the specific research objectives and research problems in a satisfactory manner. The descriptive study design will enable for the accurate depiction of the participants thereby providing valuable information pertinent to the topic of investigation (Creswell 2013). The survey form of descriptive study will be preferably undertaken by virtue of conducting interview session with the chosen participants about the specific issue upon which the research is based. A face to face interview session with the participants will be carried out in course of the survey to procure vital insight and pertinent data on the issue (Nardi 2015). The responses obtained from the participants through the survey will be recorded and converted into transcripts for data analysis in the subsequent steps. The convenience in conducting the study without having to rely on observational analysis makes the survey method more applicable in the chosen scenario. Data collected from the survey responses will enable the researcher to acquire a prudent knowledge and overall idea relevant to the topic regarding the efficacy of the sexual health education among the young people through parental involvement apart from interventions from schools and other facilitators of education. Participants And Sampling Strategy Participants The parents of the young people belonging to the age group of 10-18 years will be chosen as tentative participants in the prospective study. Inclusion Criteria For Participation Parents who are natives to the domicile of United Kingdom will be selected for the study. Parents whose wards study in schools where sex health education are imparted and is included as compulsory in the academic curriculum will participate. Parents including both the father and mother will take part in the study. Exclusion Criteria For Participation Single parents who are bringing up their child all alone will be exempted from the study. Parents without having any former knowledge and awareness on matter related to sex education will be excluded from the study. Sample Size The number of participants to the study will comprise of 80 parents coming from 20 families who essentially met the inclusion criteria for participation. The large sample size will ensure the credibility of the research. Sampling Strategy The simple random sampling strategy will be utilized to account for an unbiased mode of sampling whereby each unit of the population will have an equal and fair opportunity of being selected in the sample. Thus a representative sample may be obtained by means of adopting such strategy in sampling (Rossi, Wright and Anderson 2013). Measures/Materials/Apparatus The potential study will be done by means of arranging for a personal face-to-face interview session with the chosen participants.  A predefined set of questionnaire will be used as a guide to carry out the study in a systematic manner (Denscombe 2014). Both open as well as closed format questions will be placed before the study audience for acquiring valid and adequate responses from their ends. Expression of opinions in a free flowing manner will be encouraged through incorporation of the open format questions, while the closed format questions will essentially restrict the response of the subjects to the multiple options given. Thus the answers obtained from the closed format multiple choice questions will be succinct and specific in their approach (Brinkmann 2014). Data obtained will be of narrative type that will aim to evaluate the responses procured from the participants and employed for future analysis. Tool Development The type of research that will be conducted in the study will essentially comprise of a qualitative one. Hence the chosen form of data collection will resort to primary data only. The investigator will be responsible for collecting the data through following of valid protocols and procedures. Fresh data will thus be collected by means of adopting such primary data collection technique. The performance of the survey based study through recruitment of participants for a face-to-face personal interview session will be utilized as the tool for data collection (O’Leary 2013). The questions will be framed in a manner so that they are in line with the projected study and address the research question satisfactorily. The issue relevant to the efficacy and the quality of the sexual health education among the young people through participation of the parents in the workshops will be prudently dealt with through primary data collection. An assessment about the parent’s perceptions, beliefs, opinions and values will be obtained through this method. The behavioral responses thus will make the way for acquiring meaningful data about the chosen topic. Answers to specific questions may thus be obtained through this method by means of acting in a manner in compliance with the ethical and legal implications (Fallon 2016). Procedure The proposed study will be conducted in a manner that conforms to the ethical and legal strictures. Prior to recruiting the participants for research, an informed consent will be sought in order to get their approval and willingness to participate in the research. The research objectives and the study protocol will be made clear to the participants from the very beginning to allay their apprehensions and doubts. Efforts will be made to make them aware about the study aims and objectives without concealing any vital information from them. The matter pertaining to the delicate issue on sexual health education in school for the vulnerable population of children belonging to the age group of 10-18 years will be dealt with utmost care and sensitivity without hurting the sentiments of the participants. The main motto will be to acquire essential information about the parents’ perceptions regarding the issue. A pre interview schedule will be prepared to allow the participants to get familiarized with the happenings of the study. Four days will be kept for the interview sessions with 20 parents participating for each session on each day. The fathers and mothers will be interviewed separately so as to negate the possibility of influences in opinion highlighted. Post completion of the interview schedule, feedbacks will be sought from the attending participants on their feelings followings after expressing their opinions on the matter. The nature of the interview session although will be essentially formal, yet the investigator will try to ease out and make the participants comfortable to pave the way for free flow of discussion. Discussion The strengths of the proposed research study lies in the fact that the vacuum in detailed analysis on the issue related to the efficacy of the quality of sexual health education amongst the young people in collaboration with the school, facilitators of education and the parents will be filled up through addition of a definite dimension to the topic. Knowledge about the perceptions of the parents will account for framing appropriate policies and interventions that will drive to better address the sexual health education in the youngsters and steer them in the right path. The communication with the parents as well as the teachers and nursing educators in school is considered crucial in the development of the child who is both directly and indirectly related to the holistic growth of the child through fostering of learning and behavioral outcomes.  However, the major limitation of the prospective study is speculated to be the lack of openness and coherent, satisfactory responses from the parents on matter related to their child. The dearth of cooperation from the participants to undertake the study might also pose as a barrier in the prospective study. The ethical compliance in the prospective study will aim to safeguard the rights and autonomy of the participants. Consent will be sought before undertaking the study from the selected participants to share their willingness to participate and the methodology of the research together with the purpose will be clarified and explained to them for the sake of maintaining transparency in the research. A voluntary agreement to participate in the research will be taken through this informed consent, thereby maintaining the autonomy in research (Nishimura et al. 2013). Furthermore, the data retrieved from the audience will be processed and kept safely under the custody of the authorized personnel without accounting for leakage of dat. All data will be preserved in abidance with the Data Protection Act (Council 2016). The data obtained from the video recording of the face-to-face interview will be converted to transcript and the transcript data will be preserved in the laptop of the principal investigator secured with password. No one other than the PI and other research associates will be entitled to handle the data and under no circumstances these data will be disclosed. The data will solely be used for academic purposes and no commercial or other interests will be aligned to the research. Care will also be taken to maintain the confidentiality of the data and efforts will be made to secure the safe keeping of the data preventing the possibility of the data leakage. Secrecy and privacy of the data need to be prioritized so that the rights of the patient are safeguarded adequately (DePoyn and Gitlin 2015). Therefore, the ethical and legal considerations of the study need to be emphasized so that no situations arise that might lead to legal prosecutions because of breach of conduct.
