Answer: A hard knock suffered in the leg by an individual to the area just behind the knee is certainly painful. The area under focus is known as the popliteal fossa. The nerves in this area play a key role in the presenting symptoms of the hard knock. The most important nerve of this area is known as the popliteal nerve that is found to travel to the lower leg and foot and is responsible for permitting both motor strength and sensation. Injury to the popliteal nerve leads to tingling, pain, numbness, and weakness in the ankle, lower leg, and foot (Hosseinzadeh et al. 2013). According to Hall (2015) possible presenting symptoms that occur as a result of a hard knock on the leg in the area behind the knee commonly include swelling as a result of blood escaping from damaged blood vessels. The blood vessels present adjacent to the injury area usually gets damaged as a result of the hard knock. Swelling might also take place as a result of rupture of anterior cruciate ligament and damage to the synovial membranes. Other reasons for swelling include torn menisci, collateral ligament sprains and fractures. Chances are high that the patient would suffer acute pain. However, this can be eased with complete rest. But chances of resurfacing is also there. The patient might feel stiffness, aching or weakness. Aching is usually severe and quite sharp. Depending on the period in which the hard knock took place and the severity of the injury, there could be swollen knee or bruised skin. The person might be having difficulty in walking and might limp. Bearing weight is also an issue. Tendon or the sheath present around the tendon is found to be inflamed and the patient usually suffers intolerable pain. Excessive fluid is accumulated in the synovium, that is the membrane in the knee capsule. An underlying health condition might be indicated through this. Such form of fluid buildup is blood in most cases. However, it might also be increased secretion from the symposium taking place as a reaction to some type of inflammation. The other potential symptoms associated with hard knock are effusion. Effusion is caused as a result of intense inflammatory processes within the joint spaces. Inflammatory arthritis or effusion can happen due to gout, infection or rheumatoid arthritis. Effusion leads to warmth, pain and redness in the area when the individual attempts to walk (Giangarra and Manske 2017). To conclude, a number of symptoms are associated with a hard knock in the area behind the knee. Limitation of patient mobility is the key concern in all cases. Surgical evaluation is required for understanding the severity of the knock and undertaking interventions for restoring the function of the knee. Since the knee is known to be a complicated region of the human body, and the back of the knee has a number of imperative structures including arteries, nerves, veins, and muscle components, a hard knock to the knee are very much debilitating and must be avoided.
