Question Go on to the internet, and find the websites of two different nongovernmental organizations that state as their primary mission they would like to reduce hunger and/or food security. (You may be familiar with these organizations, or not; they may work anywhere in the world where poverty exists; and they may target any demographic group.) Discuss, how do these two organizations differently define and also seek to redress hunger or food security? (Note: focus on difference in mission and work here, and not similarities or differences in target population or location!) Answer According to Rahman, et al (67) poverty refers to a state of lack where one faces insufficiencies and financial deficiencies in their struggle to meet daily needs. Food security on the other hand refers to the availability of physical and financial capabilities to get enough food to meet dietary requirements and a healthy life at all times. Poverty threatens food security in that it makes individuals not to have enough resources to meet their food needs. In the world today, poverty levels and food insecurity have been on the increase in some parts of Asia, Latin America and Sub Saharan Africa. Different NGO’s have sprang up in the developed world with an initiative to address these challenges. This paper seeks to focus on various NGO’s whose main objective is food security and how they address the challenge of food insecurity in these regions. Stop Hunger Now is a Non-Governmental Organization that was started in 1998 by Ray Buchanan. Today this organization has been rebranded to what is now Rise against Hunger Org. the organization’s mission is to end hunger in the world through the mobilization of available resources. The organization’s goals are clearly beyond just packaging and distributing food but it is also concerned with the dietary and health requirements of individual and they have thus taken many measures in ensuring extreme hunger and poverty comes to an end. The World Hunger Relief Inc is another globally recognized Christian organization that’s main aim is centered on hunger elimination in the word. It does this by utilizing all available resources such as training farmers and people in the impoverished countries sound agricultural systems, scientific skills on farming. The organization also motivates individuals to uphold and sustain sound agricultural practices whose main benefit is the farmers and the economies of their mother countries. Lastly, the organization also partners with local and international organizations in a bid to eliminate extreme hunger and poverty. The mission statement of Rise against Hunger is centered on a worldly vision of a world that is free of hunger. Their major mechanisms are utilizing already available resources in order to realize food security. On the other hand, the World Hunger Relief Inc. mainly has its mission that is centered on a Christian background of helping the needy. Their mission clearly explains that they share the resources in their hands with the less fortunate. However, just like Rise against Hunger, they have a similar goal of eliminating hunger from the world. They therefore fight food insecurity in order to realize this objective. In conclusion, the two organizations however support a similar definition of food insecurity and hunger which is an inability to meet basic needs of access to quality food that meets dietary requirements at all times. They also invite people to come and donate to help the needy and to promote their vision to reach out to the marginalized groups of the world and the third world countries. This has provided significant help in the world in terms of fighting food insecurity and poverty alleviation around the world. References
