I have completed my high school from Nepal and have obtained my diploma in nursing from the Institute of Medical Technology located in Chitwan, Nepal. During the course of my study and stay in Sydney, Australia, I have worked in numerous cafes as waitress, sandwich hand and as cafe all rounder support. My one and half years of working experience in Cafe have helped me to excel in effective communication skills. My friendly communication approaches helped to me earn rewards from my Cafe customers. These skills will help me to succeed during my professional career as an APNP. This is because, Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (2016) highlighted that effective communication skill is an important aspect of nursing. My main career achievements while working as a Cafe all rounder include establishment of good rapport with my customers, getting positive feedbacks from my customers and successful maintenance of clam and professional demeanour while handling difficult customers. I approach the patients in order to take this vital statistics. However, the registered nurse who was my mentor, told me this is the not the right approach. Feelings Initially I was surprised by this kind of attitude of nurtured by mentor. I also felt that my mentor thinks that I am not competent enough to carry forward the work. I felt ashamed and sad. I did not react but abided by her commands. After that my mentor told me that before initiating any treatment or process of treatment it is the duty of the nurse to take informed consent and along with an clear explanation of the importance of the treatment, the therapy approach along with intended outcomes. She also informed me that since the patient is from Aboriginal community, he might need additional assistance from an Aboriginal nurse. Evaluation My initial experience was bad or rather say humiliating as my mentor sudden asked me to stop my work in-front of others. However, the entire experience ended with a good note. It helped me to understand the importance of informed consent and effective communication while working with the patients who are form Aboriginal community. Analysis My approach initially was wrong which I realised later and my mentor helped me to understand the same and this is the main positive experience. According to Shahid et al. (2013) patients who are Aboriginals communities suffer health inequalities in Australia. The main reason behind health-inequality includes lack of proper access of healthcare support, poor socio-economic determinants and lack of proper knowledge about diseases and healthcare related outcomes. So in order to provide effective care to the Aboriginals communities, effective communication holds premium importance. According to Hibbard and Greene (2013) effective communication done through maintenance of eye contact, effective listening helps the Aboriginals community patients to understand the process of care and participate in the decision making process. This increases their participation in the care plan therapy adherence and creating provision for informed decision making. Hibbard and Greene (2013) further stated that having constant support from aboriginal nurse helps in development of therapeutic relationship further. Conclusion I learnt from this experience that effective communication is an important aspect underlying the development of therapeutic relationship and holds prime significance in Aboriginal care.
