A prescription is a care program that is given in the healthcare setting and implemented by a physician and other healthcare professionals in the form of instructions governing the care plan for a particular patient. A prescription is given by the physician in a written form hence authorizing the patient to purchase a medicinal drug from a pharmacist. The theory of prescription, therefore, states the importance of a prescription, the persons authorized to write a prescription, legibility as well as the conventions that ensure avoidance of ambiguity. The first problem to be discussed is drug abuse and how prescription writing leads to safety due to reduced instances of drug abuse. The second problem is medical care and how prescription leads to reduced medical errors and better patient outcomes. Evidence 1: Eradication Of Drug Abuse Hence Leading To Patient Safety As stated above, the theory of prescription helps to ensure the safety of patients by reducing drug abuse cases. Prescriptions are given when a health care provider examines a patient and finds a medical condition that needs medication hence writes the prescription to show that this individual needs this medicine to manage or cure a medical condition (Alderman, 2018). There are medical drugs that are used as the substance of abuse and therefore the requirement of a prescription prevents people who do not have a medical condition from accessing these drugs hence serves as a tool to reduce substance abuse. To be able to ensure that the prescription writing plays this role, a prescription should include the name of the patient, the underlying condition and the drug and quantity required (Alderman, 2018). Evidence 2: Reduce Medical Errors Leading To Better Patient Outcomes Prescription writing reduces the occurrence of medical errors that are involved in the dispensation of medication to patients hence improving the patient’s outcomes. Prescriptions are written in the metric system and includes the patient-reported age and sometimes weight to reduce any errors since some medications are set for a certain age group and people within a given weight range.
