HCMG101 Health Care Systems Question: Topic is important to me from Perspective former runner, recently diagonised and suffering from Plantar Fasciitis, finding temporary pain relief using natural remedies oils, accupunture and phyiscal therapy. Answer: Running is considered among one of the best form exercise because it includes low-cost investment, appropriate environment can be accessed easily, and obvious health benefits of running. As running has become mainstream, so has the occurrence of Plantar Fasciitis. Plantar Fasciitis is seen as pain in the plantar heel and is severe with first step in morning. It then lessens quickly but after prolonged standing it returns back. Due to critical condition and severity of pain, medical treatments are sought (Attar, 2012). Plantar Fasciitis causes inflammation of a thick band of tissue that develops the arch of the foot (Dabadghav, 2016). Plantar Fasciitis is mainly caused due to the irritation in the thick tissue which forms the arch of the foot. This tissue is known as plantar fascia and as we walk or run it is responsible for transmitting weight across the foot (Schwartz, 2014). Although root cause of Plantar Fasciitis is still not found but it has examined in the studies that some mechanical risk factors are associated with Plantar Fasciitis and thus causes heel pain. These risk factors include long distance running which includes especially downhill or on uneven surface. Hence, it can be say that Plantar Fasciitis is prominent in runners due to the prolonged stress on foot which is mostly due to the running and jumping activities performed by runners and athletes (Attar, 2012). There are some temporary remedies available for Plantar Fasciitis treatment such as natural remedies oils, acupuncture and physical therapy. But treatment for Plantar Fasciitis starts with reducing the swelling which is done by sticking the foot with ice bucket or rolling foot with freezing bottle of water. Second treatment includes stretching of plantar fascia in order to remove stress on it. Pain for more than three weeks needs medical treatments like foot taping, orthotics, night splints, cortisone injections, and anti-inflammatories (Nuhmani, 2012). Orthotics is medical devices that are worn inside the shoes to rectify foot issues. Night splints are devices that are worn in the foot while sleeping in order to keep the ankle dorsiflexed. For more severe cases shock-wave therapy is used. This is done three times a week to get better results. If the pain continues for longer than 9 months even after the treatments in some runners then surgery is necessary sometimes. Nutritional supplements to the diet are recommended to reduce the pain. These supplements include Zinc, Glucosamine, vitamin C, and Omega-3-fatty acid (Attar, 2012). Shoes play important part in treatment of Plantar Fasciitis. There is wide variety of shoes available to relief and treat Plantar Fasciitis. These shoes are known as orthotic shoes. These shoes are well fitted as if fitting is not proper it will increase the pain. Orthotic shoes has high density ethylene vinyl acetate which helps in reducing the pain caused by prolonged standing and walking. There are options for those who have flat feet which includes better longitudinal arch support or motion control shoes which helped in reducing the pain due to Plantar Fasciitis (Dabadghav, 2016). Here is the list of eight plantar fasciitis shoe brands (Luckeyfeetshoes, 2018): Vionic; Aetrex; Dansko; Oofos; New Balance; Klogs; Brooks; References Attar, S.M., 2012.
