HFA4U Nutrition And Health Question: 1- Define Obesity and what are the causes of obesity. 2. What do you mean by Anthropometric assessment? Write down its uses , advantages and limitations. Answer: Introduction: Obesity is associated with the lives of a large number of people across the world. This complex health disorder is an ongoing concern for the people who are dealing with it. Obesity is not any single entity but in order to classify it, a single measure, Body Mass Index (BMI) is used. In BMI, the weight is calculated as the function of height. World Health Organization (WHO) classifies obesity according to the BMI. Various causes are there behind obesity. In minority of cases, chromosome abnormality acts as the reason of obesity. Apart from this, changes in environment and lifestyle have a great contribution to the incidence and prevalence of obesity. Physical inactivity and low relative basal metabolic rate increases the risk of weight gain which in turn becomes the reason of obesity. Also, excessive and unhealthy food intake stored as fat inside the body which as a consequence contributes to obesity (Apovian, 2016). Anthropometric assessment is referred to as the measurement of human body in order to assess the size, shape as well as the composition of it. In assessing and monitoring the nutritional status, this comparative measurement is used. Anthropometric assessment is used in many fields. It is used by the researchers to evaluate health trends in various populations and again, it is used by the athletes to understand the body size and composition. It is quick and easy to make with the use of some cheap and simple equipment and even unskilled people can make it, which is the main advantage. But, the limitation is, it cannot identify protein and micronutrient deficiencies or the accurate nutritional status (Madden & Smith, 2016). References Apovian, C. M. (2016).
