Inability to sleep or insomnia occurs when there is  difficulty in initiation of sleep or maintenance of undisturbed sleep, is the most common among the sleep disorders. People with insomnia may find it difficult to sleep, find it difficult to stay asleep all night or wake up too early in the morning. The restless leg syndrome worsens with rest and may increase in the evenings and night time. Obstructive sleep apnoea that causes snoring and disturbed sleep is diagnosed using polysomnography overnight. Narcolepsy is known to cause excessive sleepiness or even sleep paralysis (Ramar and Olson). Sleep disorders affect the overall quality of life and lead to compromised work performance, cause impaired decision making and can affect relationships. Good quality sleep is important for a person’s overall well-being. Sleep deprivation affects the mental health of a person, conversely people with mental health issues usually suffer from one of the sleep disorders. Less sleep causes constant fatigue and impairs a person’s ability to focus on  given task. Circadian rhythms are linked to mental and behavioral changes as also physical changes that occur as part of a daily cycle and are an organism’s response to the extent of light and the extent of darkness in the environment. We sleep at night and remain awake during the day due to a light-governed circadian rhythm (nigms). The sleep wake cycles, eating habits, body temperature and hormone release are functions that are governed by circadian rhythms. Disruptions in the circadian rhythm can cause sleep disorders.
