Question: Language is a common barrier to self-management promotion in health care and a risk factor for negative outcomes (Veras et al. 2014, Ngwakongwi et al. 2012). Language barriers may affect many facets of a patient’s access to health care and subsequently their ability to self-manage in illness including not understanding written or verbal instructions provided by the health care professionals and difficulty describing symptoms (Jang 2016) to difficulties even being able to access the appropriate health care at all due to an inability to fill out paperwork (Maxwell et al. 2017). While accessing an interpreter service can be a useful way to overcome a language barrier in the health care setting, the availability of interpreters may be inconsistent and further, there may be inconsistencies in actual assistance and services provided between interpreters (Maxwell et al. 2017). Jang (2016) describes coping strategies which may be utilised by patients experiencing barriers to healthcare caused by language differences, such as seeking out health care professionals who speak the same language, opting instead to use alternative or complimentary medicine, or travelling to their home countries for health care. Where interpreter services are inconsistent, or patients are unable to travel for treatment by health care providers who speak their first language, what are some alternative strategies which may employed by health care providers for the purpose of overcoming language as a barrier to the promotion of patient selfmanagement? Answer: Australia is one of the developing countries with a large number of migrants who come in search of education and job opportunities. The growing diversity in Australia has brought different, communication styles and languages in the healthcare sector. Nursing practice is profoundly affected by language barriers between the caregivers and the patients. . The well-being of millions of people is determined by the ability of healthcare providers and patients to overcome the language barrier. According to Jungner poor communication between the patient and care providers leads to disparities and adverse events in the healthcare sector (Jungner et al., pp, 30-45). Hyperkalemia is a condition that results from the high level of potassium in the kidneys. Language barrier may hinder clinicians from educating the community about the causes and symptoms of hyperkalemia. The lack of knowledge will undoubtedly lead to a language barrier while communicating with the health care providers. One of the main strategies to overcome the obstacle of language barrier includes the use of an interpreter (Penn & Watermeyer , pp 171-205). Interpreters not only facilitate the communication between nurses and patients but also act as cultural brokers. The interpreters ensure that whatever the nurses deliver is technically accurate and culturally right. Advanced technology in the mobile phones can also be used for interpretation. Google translator is free software used for interpretation.
