However, the readers admit that scientific information from certain sources are more credible than those from general outlets (Funk, Gottfried, and Mitchell, 2017). The specialty outlets include technology and science museums, science magazines, and documentaries. The general outlets cover a wide range of scientific topics per day. Recent research has shown that 54% of Americans get scientific information from the general outlets. Many Americans appreciate good work that the media does to inform to the public. However, the readers admit that the specialty sources cover information appropriately than the general sources. Debates on scientific issues are forcing the citizens to seek credible information sources. A theme like the requirements for children vaccine makes individuals to source for information on the topic. Americans are also seeking accurate news on global changes in climatic conditions. Genetically modified food is another area of scientific interests among a majority of citizens (Yang, and Chen, 2016). Individuals are also looking for credible information on modern inventions like the human genome editing. 40% of Americans have noted the problems of obtaining science news from media sources (Funk, Gottfried, and Mitchell, 2017). Additionally, 73% of citizens believe that media sources have numerous problems in comparison to 24% of individuals who note issues with the specialty outlets. Apart from the specialty sources and the mainstream media outlets, social media is another hub of scientific information to most Americans (Turcotte et al., 2015). 25% of social media users admit that they always see the science posts on the platform. Additionally, 33% of the users trust social media for credible science news (Funk, Gottfried, and Mitchell, 2017). Entertainment media is another source of science news. A section of citizens relies on learning avenues like parks and museums to obtain scientific information. Some individuals participate in research activities to discover current scientific knowledge. Both Democrats and Republicans are active consumers of science news. However, Democrats trust the media for getting the scientific information in comparison to Republicans who have little trust in the media (Boler, and Davis, 2018). 17% of Republicans are active consumers of scientific news while 18% of Democrats also seek scientific information. The major topics of interests for both political groups are science fiction, medical shows, and criminal investigations. 64% of Democrats trust the media to relay scientific information (Funk, Gottfried, and Mitchell, 2017). However, 50% of Republicans trust the media and the other 50% do not trust the media. Republicans admit that the media can relay false information. Opinion On The Topic And Research Outcome It is true that many Americans rely on general outlets to obtain scientific information. However, I would advise citizens to switch their attention from the media outlets to the specialty sources. Researchers who publish news on specialty outlets like science magazines always conduct in-depth research and produce credible results. Citizens should not rely on social media for scientific information as others post information to attract the attention of individuals. Therefore I agree with Republicans on their little trust on media outlets that the mainstream mean can rush toward reporting information even with little or no proof.
