NUR 328 Health Assessment And Health Promotion Question How would you explain “calories” or “kilocalories” in your own words to someone outside of this class? How are calories linked to basal metabolic rate? Why are fad diets dangerous to consumers ? Answer The term kilocalorie would be a technical term to a person who is not a specialist in the field of nutrition or other fields where the term is used. To help a person outside this class understand the meaning of the term kilocalorie, I would use very simple language. Here is the definition that I would give. Kilocalories are units that are used to measure the amount of energy that enters or leaves the body. It is analogous to the measurement of weight kilograms or pounds. One kilocalorie is equivalent to the heat energy required to raise one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius (Morgan et al. , 2015). Different nutrients provide the body with different amounts of kilocalories. For instance, 1g of carbohydrates gives 4 calories while 1g of fat gives 9calories. The more the basal metabolic rate the more the number of calories that the body expends. Fad diets are those that promise weight loss through total elimination or severe restriction of certain nutrients (Obert, Pearlman and Chapin, 2017). For instance, a diet may be free of fat or severely restrict carbohydrates. While fad diets may achieve what they promise (weight loss), they usually do so at the expense of the health of the consumer. The most common problem associated with fad diets is nutritional deficiencies. For instance, a diet that totally excludes fat may lead to poor absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins. If prolonged, such a diet may lead to deficiencies of fat-soluble vitamins. This may lead to morbidity or even death. References Morgan, R. C., Acton, A. J., Armstrong, C. L., Eiler, W. J., Case, K.
