Questions: Read the article entitled “Perceived Discrimination Associated with Asthma and Related Outcomes in Minority Youth” and answer the following questions : How were cases selected and defined? How were controls selected and defined? What was the main exposure examined in this study? How was it assessed and determined? Based on the data presented in table 1, among participants with asthma (cases only), what is the OR for the association of race/ethnicity (African Americanvs. Mexican American) with poor asthma control [versus asthma control (not including partial control under control)]. Based on your readings and the article, what biases could have affected the findings of this study? What did the investigators do to minimize the possibility or effect of these biases? Answers: 1. Cases or subjects were selected from the Study of African Americans, Asthma, Genes, and Environments (SAGE II) and from the Genes-Environment and Admixture in Latino Americans (GALA II). These were designed as a case control studies to investigate the socio- environmental contributors and genetics for asthma morbidity and prevalence. Cases were selected based on few criteria. Latino and African American children both with and without asthma were selected for this study. The age requirement for this study was between 8 to 21 years old. Additionally, participants were required to self- identified their all four grad parents. 2. The main exposure that was investigated in this study is perceived discrimination. This exposure was determined using an altered version of Experiences of Discrimination (EOD) questionnaire. First, guardian or caretaker’s permission were taken and then the participants were asked selected questions from the questionnaires. The questions were included whether they ever experienced racial discrimination, were barred from some activities and were made to feel inferior or harried. All the questions were close ended and binary in nature. Based on the response experiences were defined as none, never, rarely and often. 3. OR association of race or ethnicity (African American versus Mexican American) against asthma control and poor asthma control is provide below: African American Mexican American Asthma control 165 (29.7 %) 241 (48.1 %) Poor asthma control 223 (40.1 %) 107 (21.4 %) 4. Based the methods applied in this article to investigate the outcome against exposure, it can be deduced that the findings of this study can be affected by the selection bias because the authors were missing some items regarding their experiences. This might affect their true prevalence of discrimination.
