Question: Which one of the epidemiology models would you apply to the violence epidemic in Chicago discussed in the the Documentary “The Interrupters?” Provide a brief description of the model( epidemiologic triangle, wheel model, web of causation, force field model etc) and why you think this would be the best fit. Which factor within the model would you focus on to change the issues presented in the documentary. Which level of prevention would this address? Answer: Suitability Of The Web Of Causation Model For The Documentary ‘The Interrupters’: The documentary ‘interrupters’ gives an insight into the cycle of violence that was prevalence over a year period in Chicago. The documentary shows the level of brutality in the streets shown by former gang leaders and drug leaders. The movie related spread of violence to that of the infectious disease and hence epidemiological model can be applied to explain the reason behind violence. The web of causation model can be applied to the documentary. This model is suitable and best fit for the violence epidemic in Chicago because it offers an eco-social framework to understand any epidemic. The model focuses on analysing the factors leading to the social production of disease (Ventriglio, Bellomo & Bhugra, 2016). Similar approach has been taken in the movie too. For example, the character Cobe Williams, the program’s interrupter committed to preventing violence among gangs revealed that his father was in a gang and he had fancy cars. So, he regarded his father as his role model because of money and fame. He was also impressed when he visited his father in the prison and saw the camaraderie of his father’s gang. His father was a victim of gang related killing. This explains that witnessing and being a part of violence escalates own involvement in violence. The movie revealed that violence is a learned behaviour and people learn violence through their big brothers and uncles. In this way the violence spreads like disease (Slutkin, Ransford & Decker, 2015. Hence, unlike other model, the web of causation explores multiple causative factors to understand the cause behind disease. Similarly, the social factor and the learned behaviour have been interlinked to find multiple cause of street violence in Chicago. Factors That Can Be Applied From The Model To Prevent The Violence Epidemic In Chicago: Just like while fighting infectious disease, the most infectious agents needs to be controlled. Similarly, to prevent stress violence, the most contagious people needs to be reached. The web of causation model looks to identify the spider or the most contagious agent which cause the disease. Hence, attention can be paid to identify this element of the model and prevent the social issue of street violence and gun firing which was prevalent in Chicago. This method of prevention would come under the tertiary prevention strategies as it aims to reduce or prevent violence by focussing on mental and social rehabilitation of involved person. The people involved in crime can be given mental rehabilitation to change their attitude towards life. They can be given a chance of redemption by giving them opportunity for a simple and meaningful job that motivates them and give them satisfaction. For the people involved in rehabilitation of street gangs, viewing violence as a disease rather than crime can help them to avoid judgmental thinking too. This would help to understand the factors behind engaging in crime activity for individual people and show empathy towards them (Krieger, 2014).
