PHS 503 Public Health And Human Rights Question: Students 1 As we continue along our journey toward becoming advanced practice providers, or those already practicing at an advanced level but pursuing a DNP, I personally have gained an increased awareness of the variations in education and preparation for MDs/DOs, NPs, PAs, etc. In reading the article from Long et al. (2014), I was pleased to see there are many others who have recognized these differences in training as well as lack of understanding regarding training and scope of practice for other healthcare professions, and programs and initiatives have been developed to address this issue. The article cited the many benefits of team work and interdisciplinary care in the outcomes of patients, however it remains uncommon to incorporate interprofessional collaboration into healthcare education programs (Long et al., 2014). To address this lack of interprofessional focus during the training of healthcare professionals, the authors sought to effectively create an atmosphere of teamwork and interprofessional collaboration in the clinical realm. The components included mentorship and guidance from MD and NP paired faculty provider teams, a designated patient panel, and a skills-based curriculum consisting of four core aspects contributing to interprofessional collaboration and improved outcomes. Health professionals participating in this initiative included MD residents, NPs, pharmacists, and health psychology trainees. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this initiative included a one-year Fellowship for Nurse Practitioners aimed at further developing their clinical competence and independence. Ultimately this initiative greatly improved productivity, increased access to care for patients, and interprofessional collaboration. Although this initiative is certainly worthwhile and yields good results, I’d like to see the focus on interprofessional collaboration begin during the education of healthcare professionals and continue this theme once they enter the workforce. Additionally, I think the addition of a new graduate Nurse Practitioner residency, fellowship, or something of that nature to provide a transition to practice seems to be an excellent method of elevating NP practice and introducing “us” to the interprofessional realm of health care. The structuring of these programs should not only include NPs, but other members of the team like MDs, social workers, nurses, and pharmacists. For those who are already practicing at the advanced practice level, if you participated in some sort of program after graduating to transition you into your new position, do you feel it helped and contributed to your overall development and outcomes of your patients? If you didn’t experience this when transitioning into practice, do you feel it would have been helpful? For those who are working towards the APRN level, how do you feel about a residency, fellowship, etc. to assist your transition from nurse to advance practice nurse and effective interprofessional collaborator? Thanks for your input! Student 2: What are your impressions of the use of inter-professional education and team work between disciples as described in this article as a model to train NPs? Inter-professional education will increase patient access to care by decreasing barriers of practice for NPs and other disciplines. If we start training medical professionals together, each will know what others do. Each discipline can spend time on what they do best and not duplicate services. There will be more trust among providers and healthcare teams if they train together. Answer: Student 1 Overall, your ideas on this post are solid. Your counterarguments are good with a question statement at the end of the last paragraph that facilitates critical thinking. Your post presents a cogent analysis that is well-articulated with the complexities of the issue with an explanation of the impressions. Effective and adequate review of a concept or idea enhances comprehension as argued by Harmin & Toth (2018). I like the way you have presented your impressions of inter-professional education and teamwork supported by in-text citation. You have effectively provided further explanation on your opinions professionally in the first paragraph. Your arguments are well laid down correctly by appropriate paragraph transitions. Also, I am impressed with your language that is precise and fluent in your sentences which makes your post to be outstanding. Student 2 Your post presents an analysis of the article that is well analyzed by the way you have laid down your ideas and argued that inter-professional education would increase patient access to care by decreasing barriers of practice for NPs and other disciplines. Your arguments of this post are based on a perfect extended example that explains the weaknesses of the use of inter-professional education and teamwork between disciples. Your logic on this post unfolds smoothly with paragraph one presenting your impressions followed by strengths and weaknesses. This facilitates the comprehension of ideas as argued by Wry, Deephouse & McNamara (2006) by your further explanation that you have provided on the flaws. I like the way you have supported your post with evidence of in-text citation. Overall, your post has impressed me, and I am contented with the way you have presented your ideas.
